From a faith-based perspective, homesteading can be seen as a way of returning to the land and living in harmony with God's creation. It is a means of cultivating a deep connection to the natural world, and of recognizing the value and importance of living simply and sustainably.
The forgotten arts of surviving off the land, including gardening, hunting, trapping, canning, baking, food preparation, and more, can be seen as expressions of faith and stewardship. By learning and practicing these skills, we are fulfilling our God-given mandate to care for the earth and to provide for ourselves and our families.
Through homesteading, we can cultivate a sense of self-sufficiency and resilience, trusting in God's provision and learning to rely on our own labor and ingenuity. We can also develop a deeper appreciation for the simple joys of life, such as a freshly baked loaf of bread or a meal made from ingredients grown in our own garden.
Proverbs 6:6-9 reads: Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
Ultimately, homesteading can be a way of honoring God's creation, and of living out our faith in a tangible and meaningful way. As we work the land, we can offer our labor as a form of worship, and we can experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from living in harmony with God's design.
